    I haven't burned a fire in 10 yrs and decide i wanted to use this nice feature again. I only burn a few logs now & then and not as heat, more for ambience. I use to burn one of those logs before using my fireplace. Today i had an inspection for the 1st time ever in 25 yrs and he said my chimney was actually pretty clean & in no danger. Surprised me. But im getting some crumbling crown mason repair & a new top lock damper as my old firebox damper has seen better days. So maybe those logs do help? But I'd def have cleanings.

    Just pay the $300 once per year for a professional sweep and inspection performed with a camera. Burn your wood dry, and hot, and once in awhile thrown in a creosote burning log. Why fool around with burning your house down or killing your family to save $300 bucks. Nuts!

    We used to live in an old house with brick chimneys until 1961. Chimney Swifts nested there yearly, as well as in most old houses in the area. I used to look at a nest through a capped stove pipe opening. The nest was out of reach several feet below. I once stuck my hand in there and caught the bird as it tried to fly up to escape. After examining the bird, I released it back into the chimney. The nest contained at least 5 white eggs. Eventually, that chimney was lined and capped once a wood stove was added. Other old houses were knocked down or upgraded. I have noticed almost no Chimney Swifts flying and chirping lately when there used to be many, especially just before evening.

    I usually start burning wood mid to late October and finish mid to late April we only burn wood for heating our 1800sq foot home chimney sweeping log will use 2 season one at start season and one at the end of season to protect my liner over the summer they work great but you still half to sweep your chimney every 6 weeks if burn like me here in 🇨🇦

    I just cut a few cedar saplings and let them get about half dried out. Then, once a year, stuff them in bottom of chimney and light a fire under them. That hot burn from the cedar would light off the deposits in it and burn them out. Looked like a jet out the top of the chimney. Di it when it's raining or real heavy fog or you might light surrounding stuff.😊

    The biggest problem is people burning garbage wood. Burning seasoned hardwood is best but allow the chimney to heat up by letting your stove be inefficient once in a while. Open up the dampers and contribute to global warming

    Is stainless steel better at surviving a chimney fire or would it also still get damaged? I imagine after this incident you'd have to completely replace the chimney right? That would be a pretty big task for masonry.

      @@lizmego2445 unseasoned wood burns out the moisture which takes longer for the wood to burn. You will know it if you have a chimney fire which sounds like a jet. Just keep those glass doors closed when fireplace is unattended. Cheney fires need a lot of oxygen which is the key to not having a chimney fire in the first place. Secondly, dry wood has less sap( moisture) that causes creosote build up which fuels chimney fires.

    An old mountain man told me a secret way to clean a chimney. Toss a large russet potato into your woodstove once a week. The chemicals in the burning potato dries up the creosote deposits causing rhem to dry out and fall back into your firebox. It works i used this technique for 10 years. Looking up into my chimney the coatings are dry and look like soot. No creosote deposits anywhere.

    I just built a Masonry chimney using a product called Chimtek..all the Amish families I know use Chimtek and they all recommend it..I wanted to find out for myself if the liner and chimney would hold up to a chimney fire just like the manufacturer said..so I took a scrap piece to work and heated it up with an oxygen/acetylene rose bud torch..I blasted the end for 2 minutes and it was glowing orange..I could see some puddling like it was making glass...at the end .there were no cracks or distortion.. can't believe it..I feel super confident about this chimney and can't wait to use this coming Friday.. 🔥

    • @paulnicholson1906
      @paulnicholson1906 7 місяців тому

      @@ez8628 I think it does. Certainly just brickwork isn’t kosher as it can leak flue gasses into the house. With an insert you used to be able to just insert the pipe into a clay lined chimney but I think these days they want a pipe running up to the top. Not exactly the same but when my water heater was replaced they even did that. Seems excessive but you have to find out from your insurance company what they want since if your house catches fire you don’t want to have them figure a way to get out of paying.

    The old timers knew how to build a chimney with the brick and mortar right up against the flue tile so the expansion and contraction of the tile couldn’t happen and crack. Yes it “might” do some damage to the exterior of the chimney, but I would rather repoint the outside instead of having to install a stainless liner. Today you have an 1”-2” air gap in between the brick and tile when building, so yes now it’s going to expand, contract and crack.

      Something is leaking or the burners are not operating properly if you smell gas. Make sure the burners are cleaned and burning 100% of the gas. May still have a drafting issue but you should not smell gas. Have the gas company or fire department check for gas....they have good equipment.

    These swifts have proved to be way worse than I imagined. My first year at my home in VA we had them and put up with them and kinda thought it was cool,(we are from Los Angeles so yeah nature)lol. I forgot to put a cap on that year and they came back this last year. Upon them showing up my wife was also pregnant. After having my son she has been in the hospital every couple weeks because she cannot breath without oxygen and while on oxygen her levels drop to dangerously low levels. After various trips to lung specialists someone finally randomly asked,” do y’all have birds in your chimney?” And I said that we did and basically my wife has ILD and it was apparently triggered by the birds droppings and feathers still in the chimney even thought the flu is shut.

    Yes but risking a chimney fire. by a high flame fire burning it out. Best way to keep a chimney clean is not burning low fires. Burn hot fires. Don't let the flames reach the top of the flue top. This keep it cleaner longer. Go out side 👀LOOK to see if you see sparks and flames. if so? its to hot. Wet the fire down. Then go back out and look to see again sparks and flames. Keep doing this to see how high, you can burn to the flames height. Then you set on how high to burn your fireplace

This is challenging and fascinating career. I have used every aspect of my experience, and have learned more. I am currently working on my 3rd NFI cert, and spend a lot of time teaching. I highly recommend this to young people looking for a challenging , yet rewarding career. Bill
